stourbridge town branch closures to replace road bridge

Parkfield Road, just to the south of Stourbridge Town station, closed on 8 January and will remain closed until 6 May to enable the bridge that crosses the Stourbridge Town branch to be replaced.  It is thought that the current bridge dates from the opening of the Town branch in 1879.

The majority of the work to remove and replace the bridge will take place over the weekends of Saturday 24 February to Monday 26 February, and Saturday 3 March to Monday 5 March.  The main bridge replacement works will be undertaken continuously over these weekends.

As a result, the Stourbridge Town shuttle service will not operate on Sunday 25 February and Sunday 4 March, with bus replacement services operating instead to the following timetable.

The National Rail Enquiries website confirms these closure dates and states that “Bridge and tunnel maintenance is taking place between Stourbridge Junction and Stourbridge Town, closing the single line.  Buses replace trains between Stourbridge Junction and Stourbridge Town, increasing journey times by up to 12 minutes.”  I must look out for the tunnel next time I travel on the line !

We will be posting photographs on this page as work progresses on replacing the road bridge.  Each photo may be enlarged by clicking on the thumbnail.
